Fighting Cancer Together: Scopeland Technology Rolls Out Innovative, Integrated System in Leading University Medical Centers
Scopeland Technology GmbH, a database specialist and software manufacturer based in Berlin, Germany, has developed cancer research software that greatly simplifies cooperation between the leading university medical centers by allowing them all to use the same application with the same data structure. The consolidated Paedonko database can be used to combine clinical data, research data, and biobanking information. The medium-term goals are for Paedonko to become the standard for the Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology and to secure international partners. This is perfectly feasible from an IT perspective, since Scopeland Technology has succeeded in creating the system nearly entirely from standard software. This reduces time-consuming, inflexible individual programming to a minimum.
The latest word in collaborative cancer research, or, to be more precise, the new and innovative type of database application for this field, is called ‘Paedonko’, which stands for ‘pediatric oncology’. Paedonko is already in use at highly renowned institutions such as Berlin’s Charité hospital, the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel, and the University Children's Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. Plans to roll out the solution at the University Medical Center Freiburg and the University Hospital of Gießen and Marburg (both in Germany) are currently underway. The solution is special in the way it is web-based, integrated, comprehensive, and covers relevant research topics within clinics by linking clinical and research data, and biobanking information. In the past, each lab needed to work with documentation consisting of one or more one-dimensional, non-relational tables that they had created themselves and that were not linked to one another. Most clinics only had one Microsoft Access solution – on one PC or on one server. Redundant entries made day-to-day work challenging and error prone.
The efficient, integrated Scopeland Technology solution provides medical professionals and re-searchers with more “time for our own specialized tasks. It also lets us work with far more precise evaluations than we were able to in the past”, explains Dr. Renate Kirschner-Schwabe, who is based at the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Oncology and Hematology at Charité in Berlin. This translates into more time to fight cancer. Paedonko is an innovative new solution that enables all participating clinics and institutions use the same application with the same data structure, which simplifies data exchange within clinics, for whom upholding data protection and securing declarations of consent from patients are top priorities.
Working group drawn from the medical and IT sectors and further international solution rollout
Scopeland Technology has been successfully cooperating with Charité for 13 years, and the two bodies have implemented several projects together. The Paedonko cooperation project under the aegis of Charité, the University Medical Center in Kiel, and Scopeland Technology definitely represents a flagship project.
“We are very proud that more and more renowned institutions are continually coming on board and using our integrated system based on the SCOPELAND software platform”, emphasizes Karsten Noack, Managing Director and Innovator at Scopeland Technology. A Paedonko working group is currently being established; several university medical centers have already joined. The number of international projects and clinics participating in the working group is expected to continually increase.
Universal applicability for digital health
Scopeland Technology is known for modern, innovative software systems. The expert in agile database application development has been providing health care research institutes with flexible solutions for 25 years. Scopeland’s sophisticated IT solutions are custom-tailored to perfectly meet the needs of clients from the fields of scientific management and research. These individual solutions are made possible by the SCOPELAND software platform, which can build complex, custom database applications for all fields of research as well as manage, analyze, import, and export data. SCOPELAND can be used for all kinds of tasks in university medical centers and medical research institutes; it is already in use at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, Germany, the German Primate Center, Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen, Germany, and the German Rheumatism Research Centre in Berlin, to name just a few examples. A virology and gene database project is currently being implemented in cooperation with the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Federal Research Institute for Animal health, for the ad hoc de novo detection of viral pathogens using adaptive diagnostics to prevent epidemics. Rockefeller University in New York has also already drawn on Scopeland Technology’s software development.
